The vast and ever-expanding landscapes of Minecraft offer players countless unique companions, but few are as helpful or charming as the Allay. Introduced in the Wild Update, this glowing, passive flying mob has quickly captured the hearts of builders and resource gatherers alike. Understanding how to interact with this whimsical creature can significantly optimize your survival workflow and resource collection efficiency.
Finding the Imprisoned Allays
Before you can begin the process of taming an Allay, you must first locate where they are held captive. These friendly creatures do not roam freely in the wild and only spawn in specific generated structures. You can typically find them locked inside dark oak cages near Pillager Outposts or within the jail cells of Woodland Mansions.
Rescuing them requires caution, as both locations are heavily guarded by hostile illagers prepared to defend their territory. Breaking the cages or iron bars will set the glowing spirits free, allowing you to begin building a connection. It is highly recommended to clear out nearby threats before attempting a rescue to ensure your new companions stay safe.
Establishing a Magical Connection
Taming an Allay differs significantly from traditional Minecraft mechanics like feeding bones to wolves or fish to ocelots. You do not actually feed the creature to earn its loyalty; instead, you form a bond through items. To initiate this process, simply hold any item in your hand and interact with the floating creature.
Once given an object, the Allay will eagerly hold it in its hands and begin following you automatically. The creature will constantly search the surrounding area for dropped versions of that exact same item. It can follow your movements from up to 64 blocks away, making it incredibly reliable during long journeys or massive mining sessions.
Utilizing Your New Companion
The practical applications of a bonded Allay are extensive, especially for players focused on complex building projects or farming. By default, the creature will gather matching items from the floor and drop them directly at your feet. This setup proves incredibly useful when gathering blocks from high structures where resources would normally fall out of reach.
Additionally, you can alter their deposit behavior by introducing redstone components into your base design. If a nearby note block is played, the Allay will become temporarily locked onto that sound source instead of the player. It will then deliver all collected materials directly to the note block, enabling the creation of compact, automatic sorting systems.
Managing and Releasing Allays
While these creatures are incredibly loyal, managing their behavior requires an understanding of how their item slots operate. An Allay has a single inventory slot that can hold up to a full stack of matching items alongside its held object. However, sorting non-stackable items like weapons or potions can become somewhat tedious due to this limitation.
If you ever need to break the bond or change the item they are searching for, interact with the creature using an empty hand. This action instantly returns the item to your inventory, causing the creature to return to a neutral wandering state. You can also use leads and name tags to manage their positions securely without needing them to constantly hold items.
